Easter Us

On this Wednesday, we submit our ashen way to you–
you Easter parade of newness.
Before the sun sets, take our Wednesday and Easter us,
Easter us to joy and energy and courage and freedom;
Easter us that we may be fearless for your truth.
Come here and Easter our Wednesday with mercy and justice and peace and generosity.

We pray as we wait for the Risen One who comes soon.

–Walter Brueggemann

Remember how I told you in my Lenten round-up post that this Lent, I would be reading Brueggemann’s Prayers for a Privileged People? Well, I am, and it’s wonderful. I highly recommend it. It’s somehow convicting and comforting all at the time time, and profound but not intimidatingly so. The above is from a prayer called “Marked By Ashes.” I love how WB uses the word “Easter” as a verb, an action that God can do.
